We are a progressive Christian community, honouring the insights and truths of other faith expressions while seeking to mine the depths of our own faith. Intentionally diverse and welcoming, we honour the beauty of God’s rainbow diversity of humans - in terms of gender, orientation, race, mind and ability. We are committed to being a witness to God’s tenacious inclusivity, a vision of God’s commonwealth, and the struggle to manifest this commonwealth in our neighbourhood, city and world. We commit to the call to truth and reconciliation, a call that reaches into the depths of our souls and choices.
In keeping with our mission, vision, and values; in January of 2022 our historic building was transformed into Augustine Centre - housing Oak Table, Just a Warm Sleep (in cold weather), Splash children’s centre, as well as the historical sanctuary. In partnership with Augustine Centre, our sanctuary is set to undergo a renovation to be transformed into a multi-purpose space.
Affirming
As an Affirming congregation, Augustine is a community that welcomes and supports the LGBTQ2IA+ community in all aspects of life. We believe that all people are children of God; that persons of all ages, races, sexual orientations, and gender identities are part of our increasingly diverse culture.
Augustine is fully supportive of Affirm United as we strive to continue to be supportive and accepting of all.
History
Augustine United Church held its first worship service in June, 1887 and the cornerstone of the current building was laid in 1903. In 1995, Augustine became the first Affirming congregation in the United Church of Canada.
